He developed an interest in music from a young age, and during high school, decided that he wanted to become a singer. Ahn attended Dankuk University to study acting, and after his studies, made his professional music debut in the K-pop industry as a back-up singer for the vocalist Uhm Junghwa. In 1998, Ahn's cousin Joon Park was holding auditions for his project group g.o.d and asked Ahn if he would like to be a singer in the group.
